Why do insurance companies pay for windshield chip repair?
Insurance companies are so eager to repair that little chip for you because they they know that if you don't get it fixed, it will eventually crack out and destroy your windshield. Covering the cost of fixing your windshield chip saves them money. They would rather pay for the chip repair than pay for your entire windshield to be replaced.
